If you’ve been following me for even a short time, you may have noticed I like to color and my favorite subjects are from nature…flora AND fauna. So when I saw the images in Jane Davenport’s new Whimsical and Wild Collection, I was thrilled to be asked by Spellbinders if I wanted to have a play! The images are big and beautifully drawn, which makes them relaxing to color in the medium of your choice. I chose Copic markers and watercolor for these two cards, and loved the different looks I was able to achieve.
I was immediately drawn to the Panda Thank You stamp set because the little girl reminded me so much of my daughter, Emily. She’s a cuddler, and smooshes her little face into any stuffed animal she can find. The sentiment was quite fitting in this case too, so I created this clean and simple card with her in mind.
THE FOCAL IMAGE
- Stamp the large panda image and sentiment from the Thank You Panda stamp set onto Neenah Classic Crest Solar White Cardstock using Obsidian Amalgam Ink.
- Color the image in using Copic Markers. (I’ve darkened this photo up to bring out the subtle details a bit more.)
- Panda: N0, N1, N3, N5, N7
- Dress: BG11, BG23, BG15, BG49
- Stockings: RV00, RV02, RV04
- Hair: E51, E53, E55, E57
- Skin: E00, E01, E11, E13
- Halo: B000, B00, N1, N3, Colorless Blender
CARD ASSEMBLY
- Trim a piece of patterned paper from the You’re My Type paper pad to 4.25″ x 5.5″ and adhere it to a top-folding A2-sized white card base.
- Trim the colored panel down to 4″ x 5.25″ and adhere it to the card base using foam adhesive.
Strangely enough, I related to the image in the Purr-fect Cat stamp set too. You see, I had the perfect cat for 18 years, until she passed away last fall…so this card was created to honor her and I colored it to look like her and I. (And I must have done an okay job because I asked my 4 year old who this was when I was finished and he replied “Mommy and Spot”! 🙂 )
THE FOCAL IMAGE
- Stamp the cat image from the Purr-fect Cat stamp set onto watercolor cardstock using Obsidian Amalgam Ink. (I originally stamped the sentiment here as well, but ended up fussy-cutting the image out later.)
- Color the image using Peerless Watercolors and a fine detailer waterbrush. (I’m not affiliated with Peerless in any way, but I highly recommend these watercolor paint sheets. The colors are vibrant and blend so beautifully…and the bonus is their portability! You can see how I organize my paint sheets in this blog post here.)
- Cat: Pearl Grey, Geranium Pink
- Girl: Flesh Tint, Arbutus Pink, Sepia Brown, Bismark Brown, Ecru, Olive Green
BACKGROUND PANEL
- I created the background pattern using the “ink smooshing” technique. In short, I pressed Picked Raspberry, Peacock Feathers, and Salty Ocean Distress Inks onto different areas of my craft mat and spritzed them with water until they beaded up.
- Press a piece of watercolor cardstock into the droplets and dry it with a heat gun (low heat). Continue to press the cardstock into the ink droplets until you have a look you like. I used 5-6 layers of color on this panel.
- Stamp the sentiment from the Purr-fect Cat stamp set onto the background panel using Obsidian Amalgam Ink and a MISTI for repeated stamping if needed.
CARD ASSEMBLY
- Trim the background panel down to 4.125″ x 5.375″, mat it with Pitch Black cardstock, and adhere it to a top-folding A2-sized white card base using tape runner.
- Fussy-cut the cat image out with scissors and run a black marker around the edges to give it a finished look.
- Adhere the image to the card front using foam adhesive.
