I’m so excited to have the opportunity to share a couple of projects using the new Susan’s Spring Flora Collection from Spellbinders. As I wait for the buds to pop in my neck of the woods, the variety of big pretty blooms and beautiful seasonal sentiments in this collection inspired me to create four bright springtime cards showcasing some of my favorite flowers.
LILY OF THE VALLEY
Creating realistic looking flowers from paper can take a little practice, but when you’re armed with Susan’s Specialty Cardstock, the Ultimate Tool Kit, and Susan’s assembly videos, it can be a really relaxing and fun process. Today I’m starting with the Lily of the Valley Die Set because it’s one of the easier blooms to assemble and also happens to be my birth flower.
- Die cut light green cardstock four times with the stem die from the Lily of the Valley Die Set. Adhere two stems each together with liquid glue to form two sturdier stems.
- Die cut medium green cardstock with the leaves die from the set. Blend dark green ink onto about half of each leaf and add a vein to each using the leaf tip tool in the Susan’s Garden Ultimate Tool Kit. Shape the tips using the medium ball tip.
- Die cut Susan’s Specialty Cardstock twice with the flower die from the set. Add a light yellow-green center to each flower with a Copic marker and cup them using the medium ball tip.
- Adhere a flower onto each tip of the stem with liquid glue by poking the triangular stem tip through the hole of each bloom.
- Apply Gold Hot Foil to purple cardstock using the largest plate from the Essential Duo Lines Glimmer Rectangles Plate Set and the Glimmer Hot Foil Machine. Die cut it out with the largest die from the Essential Rectangles Die Set.
- Apply Gold Hot Foil to white cardstock using the second largest plate from the Essential Duo Lines Glimmer Ovals Plate Set. Trim it out with scissors to leave a ⅛” border.
- Apply Lavender Petal Hot Foil to white cardstock using the sentiments from the Yana’s Special Sentiments Glimmer Plate Set and cut them out with the coordinating dies.
- Adhere the purple background panel to a top-folding A2-sized white card base with foam adhesive and then pop the oval panel up on top in the center.
- Adhere the three leaves in the upper portion of the oval with liquid glue. Add the two stems of flowers on top, and then surround the bottom of the stem with four more leaves to create the bouquet.
- Add the sentiment beneath the bouquet with foam adhesive.
HYACINTH
The Hyacinth from Susan’s Spring Flora Collection looks difficult to make, but is really quite easy to build and even a single stem can elevate an otherwise simple card. I used it along with one of the beautiful springtime quotes from the collection for this bright and cheery card.
- Die cut bright green cardstock with the base and leaf dies from the Hyacinth Die Set. Blend dark green ink onto part of the leaves with a blending brush.
- Add a vein and striations to each leaf using the leaf tip tool in the Susan’s Garden Ultimate Tool Kit. Shape the tips using the medium ball tip.
- Die cut mauve cardstock three times with the florets die from the set. Add a little color to the center of the flowers with a couple of different pink and purple Copic markers and cup them using the medium ball tip.
- Trim a piece of teal cardstock to 5.25” x 4” and emboss it using the Plaid Company Embossing Folder.
- Die cut white and gold cardstock with the second largest outer rim die from the Essential Label Die Set. Die cut the white label with the second largest pierce pattern die.
- Stamp a sentiment from the Spring Quotes Stamp Set onto the pierced label shape with Versamark Ink, add gold embossing powder, and melt it with a heat tool. Adhere the white label directly on top of the gold label using liquid glue.
- Adhere the embossed background panel onto a top-folding A2-sized white card base with foam adhesive.
- Pop the label up in the center of the card front with foam adhesive.
- Add the hyacinth base die-cuts to the left side of the label shape. Adhere as many of the florets on top of the base as you can fit with liquid glue.
- Adhere the leaves around the base of the flower to finish it off.
DOUBLE & SINGLE PEONIES
The Double and Single Peonies are some of the most impressive-looking flowers in the collection and I wanted to make sure I used a canvas large enough to really show off all of the layers and detail. This 6” x 6” piece would make a perfect card for a wedding or other really special occasion.
- Die cut Susan’s Specialty Cardstock with all of the petal and leaf dies in the Double and Single Peonies Die Set.
- Color both sides of all of the petal die-cuts with Copic markers R22 and YR82 to create coral peonies. Shape each petal with the loop tool from the Ultimate Tool Kit and cup them with the large ball tip.
- Adhere the layers of petals together with liquid glue. For the buds, only cut, color, and shape the smallest four petal layers before adhering together.
- Color both sides of the leaf die-cuts with Copic markers G29, YG67, YG25, and YG23. Add veins to the leaves using the leaf tip tool in the Susan’s Garden Ultimate Tool Kit. Shape the tips using the medium ball tip.
- Die cut Susan’s Specialty Cardstock using the fern dies from the Ferns & Ivy die set. Color them with the same Copic markers as the leaves and add veins using the leaf tip tool.
- Apply Gold Hot Foil to white cardstock using the sentiment from the Blooming Floral Background Plate Set and cut it out with the coordinating die.
- Apply Gold Hot Foil to white cardstock using the diamond from the Diamond Floral Frame Glimmer Plate Set and cut it out using the outer diamond die.
- Trim woodgrain patterned paper to 5.5” square and mat it with gold matte mirror card before adhering it to a top-folding 6” square white card base with foam adhesive.
- Add the foiled diamond to the right side of the card front with foam adhesive and pop the sentiment up on top.
- Arrange the flowers, leaves, and ferns around the left side of the diamond and adhere down with liquid glue.
- Add gold metallic pearls to embellish if desired.
PARROT TULIP
For my last card, I wanted to create a small bouquet with a few bright tulips and a sprig of spirea. I loved this uplifting quote from the Spring Quotes Stamp Set and thought it paired perfectly with the cheery arrangement.
- Die cut Susan’s Specialty Cardstock with the petal dies from the Parrot Tulip Die Set. Apply Picked Raspberry Distress ink to just the edges of the petals with a sponge dauber and shape them with the loop tool in the Ultimate Tool Kit.
- Adhere the layers of petals together with liquid glue. Add a pistil cut from green cardstock and a stamen cut from black cardstock inside.
- Die cut medium green cardstock with the leaf dies from the Parrot Tulip Die Set. Apply dark green ink part of each leaf and add a vein and striations to each leaf using the leaf tip tool in the Susan’s Garden Ultimate Tool Kit. Shape the tips using the medium ball tip.
- Die cut Susan’s Specialty Cardstock using the fern dies from the Ferns & Ivy die set. Color them with Copic markers and add veins using the leaf tip tool.
- Die cut white and green cardstock with the branch and florets dies from the Spirea Die Set. Add a small green dot in the center of the florets with a Copic marker and cup each flower using the small ball tip. Adhere the florets to the branch die-cut with liquid glue.
- Die cut white and gold cardstock with the largest die from the Picot Petite Squares Die Set.
- Stamp a sentiment from the Spring Quotes Stamp Set onto the white panel with Versamark Ink, add gold embossing powder, and melt with a heat tool. Blend Peacock Feathers and Blueprint Sketch Distress Ink over the bottom half of the panel with a blending brush.
- Adhere the die-cut squares together with liquid glue before matting with teal cardstock and adding to a top-folding 5” square white card base with foam adhesive.
- Arrange the flowers, leaves, and ferns on the left side of the card front and adhere down with liquid glue.
- Add clear droplets to embellish.
