Snowmen may be one of my favorite Christmas icons…they’re friendly and cute and can be used on projects long after the holidays are over. So when I saw this month’s Small Die of the Month Kit from Spellbinders, I knew it was going to be a set I’d reach for time and time again. “Frankie Goes to the North Pole” is a huge die set, with enough pieces to cut two different styles of skiing snowmen, an adorable pine tree, and even a sign for the North Pole. I created two cards this month with the kit in different styles with fun Glimmer backgrounds.
There are so many ways to pose the snowmen in their skis using this month’s kit, and I thought it would be fun to make it look like this one was just heading out to the slopes. I also wanted a vintage feel for this card, so I used muted tones and gave him wooden skis and poles. The snow bank, snowman, and tree were all cut from shimmer cardstock to make them stand out a bit on top of the matte background.
To create the background, I applied Prism Hot Foil to a piece of white cardstock using the Glimmer Winter Village Hot Foil Plate Set and my Glimmer Hot Foil Machine. Then I colored the sky (and just under each snow bank) with Copic markers (BG70, 72, 75, 78) with wispy strokes to give the illusion of a distant pine forest. After adhering the background to a top-folding A2-sized white card base with foam adhesive, I added the die-cuts and a sentiment foiled in Silver Hot Foil using the Yana’s Christmas Sentiments Hot Foil Plate Set.
I have always loved images of snowmen staring up…they just look so joyful to me! And I love that the Spellbinders version incorporates his top hat too. For this card, I wanted that happy snowman to stand out, so I kept the rest of the card pretty simple. After applying Prism Hot Foil to white cardstock using the Twinkle Lights Hot Foil Plate, I blended Spun Sugar and Tumbled Glass Distress Inks over top to create a joyful winter sky.
The snow bank was created by cutting white shimmer cardstock with the largest die in the Essential Labels Die Set and applying Moondust Hot Foil to the center with one of the greetings from the Yana’s Christmas Sentiments Hot Foil Plate Set. After adhering the scene to a top-folding A2-sized white card base with foam adhesive, I added the snowman and wintery trees on top for a simple and pretty holiday card.
I hope you enjoyed this look at the November 2020 Small Die of the Month kit and thanks so much for stopping by today. I’ll be back with inspiration for one more of the November club kits very soon! Are you still working on your Christmas cards like I am?
