Summer is almost here…the days are getting longer, the temperatures are rising, and my patio furniture is green with the thickest coat of pollen I’ve seen in years. In lieu of real flowers right now, I’m opting for the beautiful blooms in this month’s Spellbinders Small Die of the Month Kit. The Handing You A Smile die set is the perfect way to send a little happiness to anyone, including allergy sufferers like me!
With so much detail in the dies this month, I wanted to create elegant but simple backdrops for my cards. I started by diecutting a piece of dusty teal cardstock with the largest two dies from the Candlewick Rectangles Die Set and then cut the second largest design from the Candlewick Ovals Die Set into the center of the panel as well.
For a little extra special touch, I added gold foil to the background panel using the Essential Glimmer Rectangles Foil Plate (the second largest plate in the set) and my Spellbinders Glimmer Hot Foil System. At the same time, I foiled and die cut a pretty sentiment in gold using the More Sentiments Foil Plates set.
The Handing You A Smile die set only contains one hand and its shadow layer. To create the opposite hand, I cut the same color of cardstocks (light peach and dark brown) a second time, but placed a thick piece of scrap cardstock under the area I was diecutting and made sure I was cutting into a “clean” plate. This prevents the mottled appearance you normally see on the back of die-cuts, and allows you to flip the die-cut over to use as the other hand.
Inking a few of the small petal and leaf die-cuts with Distress Inks (listed below) gave my single bloom a more realistic look. To assemble the card, I adhered the background panel to a top-folding A2-sized white card base with foam adhesive, and then popped all of the die-cuts up on top using foam adhesive as well.
This next cheerful card uses almost all of the beautiful floral dies in the set to create a bunch of bright marigold-inspired blooms. For this elegant and simple background, I embossed a piece of aqua cardstock using the Stained Glass stencil and a rubber mat in my diecutting machine. Then I added gold foil and die cut a piece of white cardstock using the Gilded Nested Rectangle Hot Foil Plates and the accompanying Gilded Nested Rectangle Dies.
Each layer is adhered using foam adhesive for tons of dimension. A simple sentiment from the More Sentiments Hot Foil Plates set was the perfect way to finish off this sunny card.
I hope you enjoyed this look at the June 2020 Small Die of the Month kit and thanks so much for stopping by today. I’ll be back with inspiration for some of the other June club kits very soon!
