My son’s fifth birthday is in a few days, so when I saw the latest Spellbinder’s Large Die of the Month Kit, Have Your Cake, I knew I had to use it to make him a fun card that he would get a kick out of. He doesn’t like sweets so birthday cakes are a total loss on him, but loves strawberries…so I thought a slice of paper strawberry cake would be right up his alley. (And don’t worry, there are plenty of other fruits included in the kit to embellish your cake if you have another favorite!)
Every die-cut on this card was cut from white cardstock. When I’m focusing on die-cutting on a card rather than stamping and coloring, a lot of times I use ink blending to really amp up the images and give them tons of depth. I thought it’d be fun to make one of those trendy ombre cakes, so I cut the layer pieces out of white cardstock and blended Spun Sugar, Worn Lipstick, Abandoned Coral, Candied Apple, and Festive Berries Distress Inks over different pieces using sponge daubers.
The outer icing layer of the cake was stamped with the Sprinkles Stamp Set for a little fun embellishment before blending some Spun Sugar Distress Ink around the edges to soften them. The Sprinkles Stamp Set is a free gift for VIP Value Club Members this month, so if you’ve been thinking about joining or upgrading to one of the VIP Value Clubs, now might be the time to do it! In addition to the fun sprinkles pattern, this stamp set has extra sentiments that fit perfectly on the cake layers.
To create the subtle confetti background, I applied Prism Hot Foil to a piece of Aquamarine Shimmer Cardstock using the Scattered Dot Pattern Glimmer Plate and my Glimmer Hot Foil Machine. After trimming the panel to 4″ x 5.25″, I adhered it to a top-folding A2-sized white card base using foam adhesive.
Assembly of the cake slice is very simple and it’s totally up to you how much you want to embellish it. I added lots of frosting dollops, a few strawberries (inked with Abandoned Coral and Mowed Lawn Distress Inks), and a birthday candle to mine. There are also eleven different sentiment panels you can adhere over the cake layers in different combinations, but I settled on just a simple “Happy Birthday To You” for my son.
I hope you enjoyed this peek at the September 2020 Large Die of the Month Kit and thanks so much for stopping by. I’ll be back with a glimpse at another one of the September club kits very soon. And don’t forget about the Holiday Sale going on now at Spellbinders…tons of great holiday dies, stamps, and more at up to 50% off until next Tuesday, September 15th!
