Still on the fence about hot foiling? Or maybe you bought that fabulous Glimmer Hot Foil Machine and have been a little too intimidated to take it out of the box? The new Foiled Basics Collection by Yana Smakula is the perfect set of hot foil plates to get you started on your first foiled card. Spellbinders recently sent me a couple of these new products to try out…and I was so in love with how beautifully they complemented each other and how easy it was to build cards with different looks, that I promptly ordered the rest of the collection for myself!
With modern looking sentiments, lots of foliage, and just a few tiny flowers, the collection really lends itself to making both feminine and masculine cards, so I thought I would try one of each today. The iridescent quality of the Moondust Hot Foil I wanted to use had me thinking “unicorn” right away, so I created a ultra feminine birthday card that could be perfect for a Sweet 16 party.
I started by applying Moondust and Magenta Hot Foil to white cardstock using the Foliage Border Hot Foil Plate Set. Once foiled, I cut the images out using the coordinating dies in the set, then applied just a tiny bit of Picked Raspberry Distress Ink to the center of the flowers with a dauber. Note the gorgeous iridescence of the Moondust foil…you can see the greens, teals, and blues shining through even in this photo, and it’s much more beautiful in real life! (Also note that I accidentally “foiled” my plates by sandwiching my foil upside down once while working on this card…no worries, the plates still work perfectly when foiled!)
Next, I foiled almost all of the sentiments from the Yana’s Sentiment Hot Foil Plate Set on white cardstock using Fuchsia Flower foil and cut them out with the coordinating dies. When I have my Glimmer machine heated up and running, I usually foil a ton of sentiments all at the same time because it’s great to have a stash sitting around to quickly add to cards later on. This set is particularly versatile with that super modern look and tons of greeting options.
To create more of a magical background for the card, I foiled a pretty border on a piece of white cardstock using the Gilded Nested Rectangle Hot Foil Plate and Prism Hot Foil and then cut it out using one of the Gilded Nested Rectangle Dies. Then I blended Picked Raspberry, Shaded Lilac, and Tumbled Glass Distress Ink over the entire panel.
Placing the blended background over a panel of Lavender cardstock, I adhered it all down to white card base with tape runner and foam adhesive. The foiled elements were then arranged on top in several layers using foam adhesive for tons of dimension. To finish the card off, I added a handful of iridescent sequins.
Did you know that you can apply multiple layers of foil on top of each other? For this super simple, masculine card, I created a fun overlapping pattern using just the circle plate from the Foliage Border Hot Foil Plate set.
Trim a piece of white cardstock to 4.125″ x 5.375″ and simply keep moving the circle hot foil plate around your panel, applying different colors of hot foil until you’ve created a pattern. I stuck with the same color scheme (Moondust, Prism, and Fuchsia Flower) because I thought it looked like iridescent bubbles.
Then just place one of the previously foiled sentiments from Yana’s Sentiments inside one of the bubbles. Add three layers of die-cut white cardstock behind the sentiment for emphasis and pop the entire panel up on top of a top-folding A2-sized white card base with foam adhesive.
