Happy Monday friends! Today I’m sharing a couple of projects made with the new Simon’s Snow Globes Collection by Simon Hurley from Spellbinders. (Check out the rest of the October release here…such gorgeous products this month!) This collection contains beautiful scenic die sets, gorgeous Glimmer sentiments, and pretty embossing folders perfect for creating fun snow globe cards. Here I share a snow globe sample, but also a couple of other ways to use the collection to create unique holiday cards.
SNOWY DEER TUNNEL CARD
Scene-building die sets like the ones in this collection are often great for creating tunnel cards, and I thought the Woodland Scene Die Set would be the perfect one to show this fun technique. In short, you assemble a couple of mini scenes that layer up on an accordion-style backbone to yield a three-dimensional card that stands up on its own, but can also be pressed fairly flat to fit into an envelope.
To start, I trimmed four panels of Cosmic Sky Cardstock to 4.75″ square and cut the center out of three of these panels with progressively smaller circles using the Everlasting Circles Die Set. Then I trimmed two more pieces of Cosmic Sky Cardstock to 4.75″ x 1.5″ and scored them at every quarter-inch, folding them accordion-style as shown to create the side panels.
My four panels were then embellished as shown using various die sets from the collection (panels are arranged from back to front, top-left to bottom-right):
- I embossed a piece of Raindrop Cardstock using the Sparkling Snow 3D Embossing Folder and adhered it to the back panel. The moon was cut from Alabaster Cardstock using the Woodland Scene Die Set and adhered directly to the snowy sky.
- Trees, buck, and a snow bank were cut from white and Latte Cardstock and adhered to both the front and back of the panel with the smallest circle cut-out for even more dimension.
- Birch tree, pine tree, bunny, and snow bank were cut from white, Fern, and Silver Fox Cardstock and arranged on the panel with the second smallest circle.
- Birch tree, pine tree, doe, and snow bank were cut from white, Fern, and Latte Cardstock. I splattered white paint over the panel with the largest circle cut-out before adding the die-cuts.
(TIP – Line the layers up occasionally while assembling to ensure a nice even distribution of scenic elements…otherwise you might end up not being able to see a tree or bunny once it’s finally put together!)
Once the panels are assembled, adhere the accordion side panels on top of the back panel with liquid glue first. Then add each scene layer one at a time to the accordion folds by applying liquid glue to only the left and right edges of the panel. The panel with the smallest aperture will be placed in the first fold up from the background, the medium aperture will be in the second fold, and the large aperture will be adhered to the front of the accordion side panel.
Here is a close-up look at how the different scenic elements layer up. To finish off the card, I applied Cobalt Hot Foil to white cardstock using one of beautiful greetings from the Wonderful Winter Sentiments Glimmer Plate Set, cut it out with the coordinating die, and added it to the front of the card with foam adhesive.
PRETTY PASTEL SNOW GLOBE CARD
With so many beautiful snow globe scenes in this collection, I wanted to create a traditional snow globe card next. I love snowmen, so the Snowman Scene Die Set was the natural choice for me, and I used all pastel colors for a slightly different look. I started by embossing a piece of Purple Mist Cardstock using the Sparkling Snow 3D Embossing Folder, matted it with Mirror Silver Cardstock, and adhered it to a top-folding A2-sized white card base with tape runner.
I cut the main snow globe components out of Glacier and Latte Cardstocks using the Simon’s Snow Globe Die Set, adding a little shading with Salty Ocean and Vintage Photo Distress Inks, and splattering some white paint onto the globe portion for more fun. The sentiment was cut from Mirror Silver and Mirror Gold Cardstock using the same die set. To fill my snow globe, I cut the snowman, snow banks, and trees out of white and pastel cardstocks using the Snowman Scene Die Set and added them on top with foam adhesive.
SIMPLE EMBOSSED POINSETTIA CARD
Simon is releasing some really beautiful embossing folders this time, so I wanted to create a simple holiday card showcasing the fun new Playful Poinsettia 3D Embossing Folder & Die Set. This set allows you to just emboss a pretty background, or cut a poinsettia first and then emboss it for a stunning focal image. I first created the background by inking up my embossing folder with Rustic Wilderness Distress Ink and embossing Fern Cardstock.
(Normally I use Distress Oxide Inks for this technique because it yields a much smoother finish, but I accidentally pulled out the wrong ink and ended up really liking the blotchier result for this card.)
Next I cut Crimson Cardstock using the die in the set, lined up the die-cut with the flower in the embossing folder, and ran it through my diecutting machine. Once embossed, I lightly rubbed gold gilding wax over the raised areas to highlight the gorgeous detail and popped it up on top of the card front where it was found within the background. To finish the card off, I added a sentiment foiled in Matte Gold Hot Foil using the Wonderful Winter Sentiments Glimmer Plate Set and a few Gold Mix Gems.
I hope you enjoyed these pretty holiday card projects and thanks so much for stopping by today.
