While primarily a cardmaker these days, I also love any excuse to create pretty little packages for the kind of gifts you give for no reason at all. Handmade packaging provides me with a creative outlet and the recipient with just a bit more sunshine that day. Something about the new Sunflower Field HeroScape set was telling me it would make a great gift box, and I love the results. Follow along to create your own handmade stamped box!
CREATING THE BOX COMPONENTS
- Trim two pieces of Neenah Classic Crest Solar White Cardstock (110 lb.) to 8.5″ x 8.5″ and 5.625″ x 5.625″. (This tutorial will create a box measuring 3.5″ x 3.5″ x 2.5″…perfect for a small gift or yummy candy.)
- Using a scoreboard, score the larger piece at 2.5″ from each edge as shown. Score the smaller piece at 1″ from each edge.
- Trim a small triangle out of each corner square on both pieces with scissors as shown to create tabs to assemble the box bottom and lid later on.
CREATING THE SUNFLOWER FIELD BOX BOTTOM
- Line up the bottom of the solid field layer stamp from the Sunflower Field HeroScape set with the top score line on the box bottom panel (the 8.5″ x 8.5″ panel) and stamp the first layer in Green Hills ink. Rotate the box bottom panel ninety degrees and stamp the next side, repeating until all four sides are stamped (it’s ok if the stamping overlaps on the tabs because these will be hidden when the box is assembled).
- Repeat this with the field detail layer, solid sunflower layer, sunflower detail layer, and sunflower center layer using Forever Green, ButterBar, Just Rust, and Cup O’ Joe inks, respectively.
- Lightly blend Cornflower ink from the edge of each side until just above the stamped field with a blending brush. Stamp the flock of birds above the field in Versafine Onyx Black ink.
- Fold the sides of the box up (the empty square in the center is the bottom of the box) and glue each tab behind the adjacent side panel with strong liquid glue.
CREATING THE BOX LID
- Since the sides of the box lid (the smaller scored panel) will be folded downward (as opposed to upward for the box bottom) in the final assembly, stamping will need to be in the opposite direction. Stamp the barn from the Sunflower Field HeroScape set in Red Royal ink just above the bottom edge of the box lid panel. Repeat around all four sides as shown and add fences in Charcoal ink and clouds in white pigment ink as well.
- Choose one side and stamp the windmill in Charcoal ink overlapping the score line, and the plane in Red Royal ink and the flock of birds in Versafine Onyx Black ink on the center panel (top) of the box lid.
- Lightly blend Cornflower ink around the stamped images with a blending brush to create the sky.
- Fold the sides of the box lid down and glue each tab behind the adjacent side panel with strong liquid glue.
CREATING THE GIFT TAG
- Stamp the sentiment from the Sunflower Field HeroScape set in Versafine Onyx Black ink onto Kiwi cardstock.
- Die cut around the sentiment using the smallest tag die from the Tag Infinity die set.
GIFT BOX ASSEMBLY
- Fill the box bottom with whatever treats you like (Dove Dark Chocolates are always my favorite 🙂 but a small candle would even fit in here) and place the lid on top. The lid should be perfectly snug using the measurements in this tutorial, but if you prefer a looser lid, you can trim your box lid panel to 5.75″ x 5.75″ in the first step instead.
- Wrap the box with natural twine, slide the tag onto one end of the twine, and tie the package securely with a bow.
I love all of the details on this cute little gift box and can’t wait to give it to someone special to brighten their day. The brightly colored sunflower field makes it perfect for spring or summer gifts!
