Although it’s one of my favorite holidays, I don’t usually send a lot of Halloween cards. But since they are so much fun to make, I decided to create a couple this year for my nieces and nephews. Halloween night skies are so iconic in spooky movies and décor, so I tried to recreate a bright and bold version here for this clean and simple card made with Hero Arts stamps and dies.
Start by trimming a piece of Neenah Classic Crest Solar White Cardstock to 4.25″ x 5.5″. Then trim a quick hill shape and circle out of Post-It tape or masking paper and place them on the cardstock, leaving room for the focal images on the card front. Blend Carved Pumpkin, Ripe Persimmon, Seedless Preserves, and Chipped Sapphire Distress Oxide Inks above the hill, and Black Soot and Hickory Smoke Distress Oxide Inks below the hill using an ink blending tool. For a little more depth, lightly blend Black Soot Distress Oxide Ink around all of the edges as well.
Note: I recently switched to the Domed Ink Blending Tools from Scrapbook.com and they are amazing! The foams are sturdy and much less likely to create harsh lines while blending and the tools themselves are really well-made (for example, the Velcro doesn’t pull up when you remove a foam from them…life-changing!!).
Anytime I put a little effort into a panel, I pull out my MISTI to stamp the sentiment…just in case. This tiny “Happy Halloween” greeting is from the September 2019 My Monthly Hero Kit (still available and has tons of unique images and sentiments!). Once stamped in Versamark Ink, I added white detail embossing powder and melted it with my heat tool.
Die cut the Paper Layering Haunted House from Pebble Cardstock and then lightly ink around the edges with Black Soot Distress Ink. I did this instead of just cutting it out of black cardstock because I think it adds a ton more depth and interest to the house.
You can just add yellow cardstock behind the house to make glowing windows, but I preferred the inlaid die-cutting look in this case. I just cut the haunted house a second time from a scrap of yellow cardstock, backed my grey haunted house with scrap paper, and placed each rectangle in the slot with a jewel picker after adding a dot of liquid glue.
Tip: A white crayon works just as well as any jewel picker on the market and is normally my go-to for picking up tiny die-cuts, but I think my 4-year-old walked off with mine so I’ll have to buy another!
To finish the card off, I added the inked panel to a white A2-sized card base and popped the haunted house up on top with foam adhesive. Then, I added a couple of die-cut bats and a ghost around the house (all included in the Color Layering Haunted House die set) with liquid glue.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this colorful and inky Halloween card and thanks so much for stopping by today. A new challenge begins over at A Blog Named Hero on the 15th with great prizes from Hero Arts, so I hope you’ll join us!
