In a year when I’ll probably be giving more gift cards than usual, simple but cute ways to dress them up and deliver them are a must. Scrapbook.com recently sent me a box of some of their exclusive products to use on a project as part of their Handmade Holiday Papercrafting Parade over on Instagram, but I wanted to share a quick tutorial on my blog too to make these easy gift card tag ornaments that are perfect for hanging on a friend’s tree or a neighbor’s door knob this year.
Start by cutting Bubblegum Pink, Turquoise Sea, and Jellybean Green cardstock with the largest die from the Jumbo Tags Die Set. (Here I’m using the new Magic Mat with my diecutting machine to get amazing smooth cuts with little plate warping.) This die set has some of the largest tag shapes I’ve seen and includes two different hole sizes that you can nestle within the tag frame, making it super versatile for all kinds of projects.
Score each jumbo tag at 3 inches from the bottom. Turn the tag upside down and mask off the area below the score line with Mint Tape as shown and secure a stencil to the tag using more Mint Tape. (This tape is low-tack and repositionable, making it perfect for masking and holding down stencils and dies!) Apply Metallic Frost Ink through the stencil with a domed foam blending tool for a subtle and pretty design.
Here I used the Little Rainbows Stencil on the pink tag, the Stars Stencil on the blue tag, and the Trees Stencil on the green tag. Be sure to stencil the pattern facing “up” towards the bottom of the tag, because you will be folding this part toward the front of the ornament next.
Stamp the sentiment from the Naughty and Nice Stamp Set at the top of the tag in Versamark Ink, add clear embossing powder, and melt with a heat tool. Fold up the stencil flap and secure down with a 3″ x 0.5″ piece of double-sided tape on each side as shown (these sheets are perfect for cutting little strips like this!).
Die cut embellishments for the ornaments using the Holiday Words, Holly Frame Gala, and Snowflake Splendor die sets. For the poinsettias, I used this beautiful and smooth Floral cardstock pad. Assemble with liquid glue and pop up on the front of the ornament with foam adhesive.
Add a hanger to the hole with 1/4″ white satin ribbon (or any twine or ribbon), stick the gift card inside (they fit either way depending on if you want the card to show or not), and hang on a tree or door knob to leave a surprise gift.
Looking to personalize them a little more? I stamped a few names out on white cardstock using the Vintage Type Lower and Classic Alpha Lower stamp sets and cut them out with the second smallest tag die in the Jumbo Tags die set. They can be threaded onto the ribbon in the back before you tie them up!
I hope you enjoyed this quick and easy holiday project and thanks so much for stopping by today. Be sure to check out the Handmade Holiday Papercrafting Parade over on Instagram (look for this project in my feed for details) for tons of holiday inspiration!
