I’m so excited to finally share a few projects using the new Christmas Foiled Basics Collection by Yana Smakula. Oftentimes I pull out my Glimmer Hot Foil Machine when I want to add some elegant accents to a card, but when I saw the gorgeous designs in this Glimmer plate collection, I knew the foiled elements would be the big star of the show. For these three cards, I’m sharing a few easy ways to add a touch of color to let that foiling on your project shine.
CHRISTMAS VILLAGE SLIMLINE CARD
The Glimmer Winter Village plates stack perfectly to create beautiful scenes on a portrait card base, but I thought it would be fun to arrange them horizontally to make this slimline card.
- Start by applying Black Glimmer Hot Foil to a piece of grey cardstock measuring 8.25” x 3.25” using the two rows of buildings in the Glimmer Winter Village set side-by-side.
- Add snow above the buildings by applying Prism Hot Foil using the scattered snow plate in the Glimmer Winter Village set and the year beneath the buildings using Prism Hot Foil and the numbers in Yana’s Christmas Sentiments set.
- Using colored pencils, add solid red coloring to the doors and chimneys on all of the buildings except for the church. Color the walls of each building a solid white.
- Add white to the trees and just beneath the snowdrifts as well, leaving the strokes heavy for a sketchy, artistic look.
- Mat the grey panel with red satin foil cardstock and adhere it to a white top-folding card base measuring 3.5” x 8.5”.
- Apply Red Hot Foil to white cardstock using the Merry Christmas Sentiment from Yana’s Christmas Sentiments set and cut it out with the coordinating die. Adhere it to the card with foam adhesive.
MULTICOLOR FOILED PRESENTS CARD
I loved the modern look of the Glimmer Gift Border plate and thought it would look fun as a full background foiled in a non-traditional color scheme. Since I wanted each present to be a different color, it takes a little more time than usual to foil, but I love the end result and wanted to share this method that can be adapted for tons of Glimmer plate designs!
- Trim a piece of white cardstock to 4.125” x 8.375”. Using an embossing mat in your diecutting machine with the Glimmer Gift Border plate, emboss the design only into the white cardstock twice to cover the entire panel.
- Working with one color of foil at a time, secure small pieces of foil over the presents you want to foil in that color with low-tack tape (this is a great use for foil scraps!), being careful not to have the tape overlap the design as this could leave a textured impression in your foiling.
- Nestle the Glimmer Gift Border Plate back into the embossed cardstock on top of the scraps of foil, secure the plate to the cardstock with more low-tack tape, and heat the entire stack on your Glimmer Hot Foil Machine and run it through your diecutting machine as you would normally.
- Repeat for the remaining colors until the entire background is complete (Here I used Cobalt Blue, Skybright, and Green Hot Foils).
- Foil the circle, foliage, and sentiments from the Christmas Foliage Circle Border, Christmas Organic Foliage, and Yana’s Christmas Sentiment sets using Cobalt Blue, Skybright, and Green Hot Foils.
- Adhere the background panel to a top-folding A2-sized white card base with foam adhesive. Arrange the sentiments and foliage on the card front and adhere with liquid glue and foam adhesive.
EASY CHRISTMAS FOLIAGE CARD
Ink blending over foiled elements is one of my favorite ways to add a touch of color to a gorgeous Glimmer design, and I thought it would be perfect to add a little dimension to the foiled design I created with the Christmas Foliage Background plate.
- Foil the Christmas Foliage Background onto a piece of mint cardstock twice using Prism Hot Foil.
- Blend Evergreen Bough Distress Ink around just the edges of the foiled panel with a blending brush.
- Foil the sentiment and foliage from Yana’s Christmas Sentiments and Christmas Organic Foliage sets using Moondust and Fuchsia Flower Hot Foils.
- Add a tiny bit of simple shading to the floral swag with colored pencils for a little depth.
- Adhere the sentiment and foliage to the card front with foam adhesive.
